A Walk In Windsor Great Park
A Walk In Windsor Great Park
Around 1680 King Charles II planted a wide avenue comprising a double row of elm trees running south from Windsor Castle to Snow Hill a little under three miles away.
This is now known as the long walk and the top stretch by the Castle is used by many visitors to Windsor as a lovely place to walk in the sunshine. Few visitors realise that at the far end behind the copper statue of King George III lie many more miles of parkland to enjoy.
Windsor Great Park covers 5000 acres of the Surrey and Berkshire countryside and is definitely worth a visit. There is so much to enjoy. Firstly you are surrounded by some of the oldest Oak trees in England. A number are believed to date back as far as the time of William the Conqueror almost 1000 years ago.
A huge lake at Virginia Water is a lovely place for a walk and the Roman ruins on its bank are a strange sight. They were actually bought to this spot from of Leptis Magna near modernday Tripoli in 1818 and were rebuilt as a folly.Nearby stands a giant totem pole made by native people in British Columbia which was given to Queen Elizabeth in 1958.
Moving into the centre of the park a massive polo field The Guard’s Club is an unexpected delight. Polo matches are exciting and are played here most weekends in summer. There is usually no entrance fee.
In the centre of the Great Park is a small village. It was built to provide homes for Royal estate workers. It is a beautiful place best appreciated on foot or bicycle.
Saville Garden on the south eastern boundary of the park contains a beautifully maintained garden of rhododendrons azaleas trees and conifers with a small lake and a hothouse. An entrance fee applies to this part of the park.
Finally as we head back toward the castle the huge deer park sits between Windsor Castle and the Great Park village. In the rutting season the calls of the stags echo across the local countryside.
As you can see royal Windsor has so much more than the castle to offer visitors.

Bed Breakfast Accommodation
Bed Breakfast Accommodation
A hitherto novel concept in India of Bamp;B accommodation is fast catching on in Delhi.
Delhi hotels and Delhi guest houses are just way too small in number to fulfill the growing demand for rooms in the city. With an eye on the 2010 Commonwealth Games the state govt. and the national tourism board are pushing this scheme. At last count close to 400 households had already registered for this scheme. Many tourists will enjoy staying in such accommodations as itll give them an opportunity to experience the Indian way of life from close quarters. The one thing that govt. agencies sanctioning these homes as Bamp;B should bear in mind is that quality parameters cleanliness amenities transport connectivity service should be complied with strictly. If standards are set high at the very outset tourists will go back satisfied and spread the word. Nothing works better than word of mouth. A sample of the negative Delhi hotel reviews will drive home the point in no uncertain way. This new concept should be set on course at the very outset. The potential of this scheme is borne out by the fact that publishers websites and other media are working towards editions and databases around this theme. These accommodations have attained special status in the UK and are very popular across much of Europe. About time India got onto the Bamp;B bandwagon.
In a small measure this concept has been popular in the southern hill districts of Coorg Karnataka and Wayanad Kerala. Both these regions have coffee and tea plantations respectively. Town sizes are small with few hotels. And tourists have taken to the idea of living in Bamp;B accommodations and experiencing life on the estates up close.
