A Great Time On The Plein
No I didnt mean on the Planealthough thats actually where my journey started; but let me explain. Undoubtedly everyone loves the weekends and everyone has their idea of what constitutes a good one. Some people like to go out and paint the town red others like to pop out for a day in the country or by the sea; still others prefer a days shopping trip to a major metropolis such as London or Manchester. My preference is to take a weekend break to one of the exciting venues of Europeand I can do it for the same price as weekend with the lads.
My very favourite country for a weekend break is the Netherlands and I often jaunt off for an impromptu Weekend Break in Amsterdam. My weekend break to Amsterdam starts the minute that my plane lands at Schiphol Airport; now most people are in a hurry to get off the plane and rush off through the terminal. I do the exact opposite; Im just happy to be there so I wait till the crowds have rushed off and then I calmly walk off the plane collect my bags walk through the arrivals concourse and straight to a taxinice and easy.
What do I do next? Well my taxi delivers me to my hotel I drop off my bags and take the No 2 tram to my favourite haunt; the Leidsepleinonce I arrive there I know that my weekend break in Amsterdam has really started.
The Leidseplein is a large square in central Amsterdam; the other major square in Amsterdam is Dam Square; most tourists go to Dam square but the more savvy and discerning stick to Leidseplein. The reason that I spend my weekend breaks in Amsterdam in the Plein is that is the premier social centre of the city.
Within the Leidseplein area you will find an eclectic mixture of Bars Restaurants Theatres and very often various street entertainers; I myself have seen Jugglers Fire Eaters Mime Artists and Conjurers performing there. It is very easy to spend a couple of days just within this area as there is so much to see and behind the Plein you will find a Piazza that in the evening is reminiscent of one of those night time scenes from Van Gough.
I always celebrate my first night in Amsterdam with a slap up meal in a South American Restaurant at the edge of the Plein; they cook the most succulent steaks there and serve a range of amazing cocktails; you can take your time repose a while and after a couple of hours head off as your fancy takes you. I generally do just that; sometimes I catch an after dinner theatre show or just pop into the Swarte Shoepthe Black Sheep Bar at the top of the Plein.
It shouldnt be too hard to see now just why I am enamoured by Amsterdam and the Leidseplein in particular; lets face it would you prefer to spend an average night out with the ladsor spend an exceptional weekend break in Amsterdam?
