Floating over the historic Angkor area in a hot air balloon may just be the most moving experience of your holiday in Cambodia. The balloon ride is one of the best ways to experience the grandeur of the temples and it truly enables one to appreciate the vastness of the sprawling temple complex.

Angkor can be termed as the seat of Khmer Empire that flourished in Cambodia from the 9th century till the end of the 15th century. The monumental ruins of Angkor are located near the modern day Siem Reap and encompass an area stretching northwards toward the forest and farmlands located near the Great Lake and southwards toward the Kulen Hills. This historic complex was designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and draws in 2 million visitors annually.

There are over thousand temples in the Angkor complex varying from unrecognizable heaps of brick and ruble to flawlessly preserved temples such as the grand Angkor Wat. According to a scientific research the Angkor city complex was the largest pre industrial construction and stretches for over a thousand square miles. Due to the large size of the complex the balloon is one of the best ways to see the complex in its entirety.

The Angkor Balloon has been compared to the London Eye due to the amazing panorama that it offers though a floating helium balloon it is stationary and is tethered down nearly 500 meters away from the complex. From the birds eye view the balloon offers it is possible to appreciate the ingenuity behind the construction of the ancient city. Such as the irrigation systems of Angkor that originate form the Great Lake and a series of complex waterways that regulate the flow of water through out the city complex.

Details such as this would not have been visible if one were to observe the complex only from the ground apart from the intricately planned waterways; it is also possible to understand the amount of meticulous planning that went in to positioning different city buildings and temples. Due to the close proximity of Angkor to the modern city it would not be difficult for travelers to book into a luxury Siem Reap hotel such as Grand Hotel dAngkor on their journey to discover the ruins of Khmer Empire.
